Professor

Dr. Matthews is a Professor of Psychology. Dr. Matthews joined the faculty at The Citadel in 1994. He regularly teaches undergraduate courses in general psychology, behavioral neuroscience, cognitive psychology, history and systems of psychology as well as graduate courses in human growth and development. Dr. Matthews has also taught courses in developmental psychology, experimental psychology, and psychology of drugs. 

Dr. Matthews served as the Undergraduate Program Coordinator for Psychology from 1998-2020. He has served as chair of various university committees, including the Research Committee, Campus Affairs Committee, and the university wide IRB committee at The Citadel.

Dr. Matthews’ research interests include automatic/controlled uses of memory, the effect of cues on memory, intelligence test validity, effects of stress on performance, and teaching effectiveness. Dr. Matthews has published articles on cueing and memory, problem solving, teaching techniques in psychology, intelligence test validation, and the effects of stress on cortisol levels.
