The Citadel NCBI Team’s mission is to develop a culture of principled leaders who recognize and appreciate diversity as a foundation of the Core Value of Respect.

The Citadel’s first direct experience with NCBI took place in the summer of 2011. Robert Dungey and Joyce Shabazz, a senior NCBI training team, presented the “Welcoming Diversity” workshop that is the mainstay of the program. Senior staff, Deans, Department Heads, the Commandant’s Department, faculty members and frontline staff were all represented at this workshop. The response to the workshop was overwhelmingly positive and the college moved forward to develop its own team.

In February 2012, Robert Dungey and Joyce Shabazz returned to campus and provided a three-day “Train-the-Trainer” workshop. Eighteen members of the Citadel faculty and staff attended this in-depth session, and a group of these individuals make up our training team. Under the supervision of Julie Lipovsky, The Citadel built its training team and hosted its first workshop in the 2012-2013 academic year. Workshops continue to be offered as an open-invitation and to select groups. 

How does the Citadel NCBI work?

The Citadel’s NCBI Team offers experiential workshops and classroom activities to bring the NCBI principles to faculty, staff and students. These offerings are opportunities for enhancing communication among members of The Citadel community in a focused way. Workshops encourage participants to learn about themselves, their biases towards those of other groups, the experiences of those who come from other groups, and to learn skills for interrupting disrespectful behavior. The goal is to foster a campus climate that is welcoming and respectful to all.

Get Involved

There are a rang of opportunities to become part of the Citadel NCBI experience after attending a Citadel NCBI Workshop: 

  • Student Club: NCBI Leadership for Leadership in Diversity/Respect (NCBI-LDR) a cadet club that is open to all SCCC students and meets regularly during the school year. 
  • NCBI Team is open to faculty, staff, administrators, CGC, and active duty military students including MECEPS. The team meets once a month during the fall and spring academic terms. 
  • The Training Team meetings are open to NCBI Team members who have completed the three-day Train-the-Trainer workshop and are scheduled as needed for management of the Citadel NCBI and preparing for workshops.
