Dr. Thomas Kent has had a long and successful career by most measures. After graduating from a small college in Pennsylvania, he joined the Air Force. He saw himself as a career officer and loved his time in the Air Force. He is fond of saying, “I never had a bad boss.” While he was in the Air Force he earned a Master’s Degree. While he was working on this degree he decided to work toward a Doctorate, so he applied to the Air Force to begin his doctoral studies. Unfortunately, his “up or out” time was approaching and he had not heard from the Air Force regarding his academic training. So, he resigned his commission to pursue his doctorate on his own.
After leaving the service he became a cop in a mid-sized town in Connecticut. After a short time he got accepted to graduate school which he attended at Case Western Reserve University. After 4 years and a Ph.D. in his pocket he worked for two major US corporations. At one he became the Director of Worldwide Manufacturing Excellence; in the other he became Vice President of HR and Strategic Planning. After 6 years with each corporation he started his own consulting company. With a Partner and 19 Associates he consulted to major US manufacturing companies on improving their manufacturing processes, their business processes, and their use of teams.
During these stints as an employee with corporations and as a consultant to corporations he and his Partner developed world changing, state of the art manufacturing processes. After 13 years with the consulting practice he left to teach and research. He taught at a university as a full professor and served as Chair of their Management & Marketing Department until his retirement in 2016. His research is in the area of leadership and the behaviors that define high performing leaders.
