The Citadel offers graduate students paid assistantships that provide hands-on experience in higher education settings at an hourly rate. The opportunity to work closely with faculty and undergraduate students in teaching, research, or administrative environments is an integral part of your education. Skills learned in assistantships prepare students not only for the college, but for corporate, government, and nonprofit organizations. Assistantships also provide students with the financial resources necessary to pursue their degrees. Human Resources can help you with the process.
Assistantships are available for graduate students who carry a minimum of six credit hours each semester. Assistants must also remain in good academic standing from semester to semester to continue an appointment. However, an appointment is not guaranteed from semester to semester. Once hired, graduate assistants work approximately 20 hours each week. Approval by the dean/dean of the department head is required before additional hours can be compensated. Assistants receive an hourly rate in accordance with the current Graduate Assistantship hourly pay policy.
Graduate assistantships are not employees of The Citadel; they employ the rights and privileges of other graduate students. The privileges and benefits of assistantships vary across and within schools and departments. The assistant should be informed of the school/department policies as well as College Regulations and follow them consistently. They are obligated to maintain standards for academic honesty and integrity. The integration of the assistantship responsibilities and academic program must be carefully coordinated and monitored by a faculty member.
You might hear about a position within your college department. Typically, however, The Citadel Human Resources Department recruits graduate assistants and matches candidates with suitable positions. If you have an interest in working as a graduate assistant begin by completing an application.
Applications are available online through the Human Resource Department’s website.
